Essay Prompts for Friday, February 4
  1. O'Brien says that a true war story is never really about war.  If we assume that The Things They Carried is a war story, then what is the novel really about?  Provide evidence from the text.
  2. O'Brien describes what a true war story is or isn't.  Using his rationale and evidence from the text, argue whether or not the novel can be seen as a true war story.
  3. In an interview with Michael Coffey, O'Brien says that stories save people's lives.  How would writing this story save the character of the narrator, Tim?  Who else is he saving by telling these stories?
