Warm-up #4: Editing Symbols
The following are typical editing symbols. Write down the symbol and what it represents. Fill in those you don't know as we go over it.

Editing Review
- Quote Floaties
- Type 1: Who/when said
- Type 2: Quote significance
- Type 3: Your words to author's words
- Simple vs Sophisticated Sentences
- Too many simple sentences= CHOPPY
- Try: commas, noun phrase appositives
- Too many sophisticated sentences= WORDY
- Try: deleting repetition, dividing into simpler sentences
- Watch out for:
- Weak words (good, important, fun)
- MLA quote citation (O'Brien #)
- 2 quotes per body paragraph
- Refer to author as O'Brien, narrator as Tim
- Using "said" for every quote
