Warm-up #4: Editing Symbols
The following are typical editing symbols.  Write down the symbol and what it represents.  Fill in those you don't know as we go over it.
  • The dog went to  ^  park.

Editing Review
  • Quote Floaties
    • Type 1: Who/when said 
    • Type 2: Quote significance
    • Type 3: Your words to author's words
  • Simple vs Sophisticated Sentences
    • Too many simple sentences= CHOPPY
      • Try: commas, noun phrase appositives
    • Too many sophisticated sentences= WORDY
      • Try: deleting repetition, dividing into simpler sentences
  • Watch out for:
    • Weak words (good, important, fun)
    • MLA quote citation (O'Brien #)
    • 2 quotes per body paragraph
    • Refer to author as O'Brien, narrator as Tim
    • Using "said" for every quote

Warm-Up #1: Weight

In The Things They Carried, the characters often have burdens that metaphorically weigh them down.  For example:
   Lt. Cross- unrequited love for Martha
   Kiowa- a need to remain Christian in war
   Norman- guilt for not pulling Kiowa out
   Azar- expectations to be a "macho" soldier
List 5 things that weigh you down.  You will not have to share these if you do not want, so be honest with yourself and with me.

Essay Prompts for Friday, February 4
  1. O'Brien says that a true war story is never really about war.  If we assume that The Things They Carried is a war story, then what is the novel really about?  Provide evidence from the text.
  2. O'Brien describes what a true war story is or isn't.  Using his rationale and evidence from the text, argue whether or not the novel can be seen as a true war story.
  3. In an interview with Michael Coffey, O'Brien says that stories save people's lives.  How would writing this story save the character of the narrator, Tim?  Who else is he saving by telling these stories?
